Perry was born on July 25, 1968 in Chicago In Illinois, she was the child of Laurie Metcalf Perry and Jeff Perry. In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as as seen through flashback) her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's first TV roles. Perry was forbidden to start acting in front of her family until she reached adulthood, as they feared the stress it would create. Perry said she felt timid to perform in high school but began doing shows at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred to the university from Boston University. Following her graduation, Perry moved to New York to search for jobs on television, landing small parts in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent but homesickness brought the actress back to California and she was able to find theater jobs. Perry performed with her mom as part of The Other Place at Broadway, back in 2013. In 2015, she performed with her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning film Anna Christie on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in nine episodes of the ABC crime thriller The Family in 2016. In 2017, she played a recurring role on the ABC Political thriller Scandal with her father. The same year her character was cast the younger character of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger model of the mother's role. The character was picked by auditions, even the fact that she had a deep relationship with the show.
